A carefully curated selection of quintessentially Caribbean scenes, our stories, our heritage, and our villages are depicted timelessly and in all of our glorious diversity.  Match these with the Express & Empower gallery wall collection to amplify these special stories.

Woule Sek: A popular hoop rolling game popularized all around the world and enjoyed in particular in the Caribbean.

Foutbol: An enchanting depiction of children playing foutbol (soccer in some parts of the world).

Madan Sara: “Madan Sara” are an essential part of the Haitian economy: they’re the women who sell food and other essentials in markets. They take their namesake from the beautiful madan sara yellow bird that flocks in large quantities to squawk and squeak in unison, almost in conversation like format, similar to the Madan Sara (women) when they gather to sell together.

The marketplace: Imagery of the hustle and bustle of the marketplace where fruits, meat, and veggies are sold.

Fisher Folk: A delightful imagery of Caribbean fishing.

Cecile Fatiman: Girl Power Gusto! Cécile Fatiman lived to be 112 years of age (1771-1883). In sum, she’s the catalyst of the Haitian revolution but often not learned about in our history. The Haitian revolution inspired the freedom of enslaved people all throughout the region. She’s famous for her participation in the vodou ceremony at Bois Caïman, which is considered as one of the starting points of the Haitian Revolution. A spirit visited her and she was able to inspire the start of the revolution. The frame says “prendre la relève” which means to “take over” in French. Inspire your little changemaker to carry on.

Cécile Fatiman was the daughter of an enslaved African woman and a white Frenchman from Corsica. Learn more about her on our resources page.

Festival Street Bands: rara in Haiti, Gagá in the Dominican republic. These lively street bands crop up during the Easter season to signal the launch of the beloved festivities.
